Village Acupuncture Becomes First Acupuncture Clinic Serving Southern Maine & Seacoast New Hampshire to Offer Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a safe, painless, and highly effective treatment for pain, injuries, inflammation, and many other medical conditions

Village Acupuncture is pleased to announce that we are now the first acupuncture clinic in the southern Maine and seacoast New Hampshire region to offer a range of safe, painless, and non-invasive laser treatments for our patients.

“We decided to invest in laser therapies because they work so well when combined with acupuncture,” said Kim Trafton, owner of Village Acupuncture. “For some patients—particularly those who suffer from stubborn pain conditions that are difficult to treat or older patients who might heal or recover at slower rates—we weren’t always getting the results we wanted. But after researching the therapeutic benefits of these devices, it became clear that light therapy could help our patients feel better more quickly with no side effects. Effective patient care is our top priority, so it was an easy decision.”

At Village Acupuncture, we use only high-quality devices, such as those made by Bioflex and Celluma, that utilize technology supported by decades of medical research. In fact, more than 2,000 research papers over the past 20 years have affirmed the safety, efficacy, and therapeutic benefits of the laser therapies we are now using in our practice. Laser therapy is commonly known by a variety of names, including cold laser therapy, low-level light therapy, and red-light therapy, among other terms.

“Much like acupuncture, laser therapy stimulates, enhances, and accelerates the body’s natural self-healing process,” continued Trafton. “Because laser therapy can provide our patients with greater pain relief, faster healing, and lasting results, we are making laser treatments available to all of our patients. For insurance patients, there will be a small fee of $10 per treatment, and it will be incorporated into the standard price of our treatments for self-pay patients. We want everyone to benefit from laser therapy, and we don’t want cost to be a barrier. In addition to a full on-site herbal pharmacy that we completed last year, we are so excited to offer laser therapy to our community!”

Benefits of Laser Therapy

  • Evidence-based and highly effective. Medical research indicates that laser therapies can produce measurable improvements in healing and symptom alleviation for a large percentage of patients. And when combined with acupuncture, laser therapy can significantly accelerate a patient’s healing and recovery process.

  • Painless and non-invasive. For highly sensitive or needle-phobic patients, laser therapy can be an attractive alternative to traditional forms of acupuncture. Treatments are easily administered to specific areas of the body, and patients experience no physical discomfort or skin irritation.

  • Safe and side-effect free. Decades of medical evidence have demonstrated that laser therapies are 100% safe and non-toxic. Laser treatments are even safe enough to use on young children and immunocompromised patients, and they have no known adverse side effects.

Therapeutic Effects of Laser Therapy

  • Stimulates increased blood flow and oxygenation to injured tissues.

  • Helps repair damaged muscle fiber and accelerates the regeneration of muscle tissue.

  • Increases collagen production to reduce scar formation and improve joint function.

  • Enhances the body’s anti-inflammatory response and reduces inflammation.

  • Encourages myelin formation and neuron growth for optimal nerve recovery.

How Laser Therapy Works

Technically known as photobiomodulation therapy, laser therapy uses either low-intensity laser diodes or high-intensity LED arrays to treat injured, inflamed, damaged, or diseased tissue. Laser therapy helps to stimulate healing and regeneration at the cellular level, improve internal circulation and lymphatic drainage, and accelerate the body’s natural healing process, which makes these therapies especially useful in the treatment of musculoskeletal and soft-tissue injuries, chronic and acute pain, severe and slow-healing wounds, and a number of other difficult-to-treat conditions.

Approximately 90% of the body’s cellular energy requirements are generated in a cell’s mitochondria, which store biochemical energy in a molecule called adenosine triphosphate—or ATP. Found in all living tissue, ATP is essential to the regulation and storage of cellular energy. When tissue is injured, inflamed, or diseased, the cells in these damaged areas tend to produce lower levels of ATP, which can significantly decrease metabolic function, impair healing, and prolong recovery times.

At the cellular level, laser therapy works by increasing the production of ATP, helping to regenerate damaged tissue by stimulating protein synthesis and the formation of healthy new cells, tissues, nerves, and blood vessels. Photobiomodulation has also been shown to increase antioxidant defenses and reduce oxidative stress and prostaglandins—the molecules associated with pain and inflammation.
